Halong Bay translated into English as ‘Descending Dragon Bay’. This name related to the legend. The legend has it that, long time ago when Vietnamese just established the nation of Viet. There was an attack from Chinese. In the hardest situation, there was a dragon and its children appeared and helped Vietnamese flight against the Chinese invaders. After that victory, the dragon decided to stay to protect Vietnamese people. And where the mother dragon descended into, people called it ‘Halong Bay’, next was the ‘Bai Tu Long Bay’ means ‘Children of Dragon Bay’ where its children descended to. The place called ‘Bach Long Vy’ means ‘White Dragon Tail’ stretching to Chinese border in hundreds of kilometers where dragon turning its tail to threaten the Chinese enemy.

The above legend not only explain the desire of ancient Vietnamese in the war but also clear to people about natural phenomena of rock formations in Halong Bay which you can see many small rocks in ’Children of Dragon Bay’ and there are bigger islands in the area of ‘Mother Bay’ which is Halong Bay. Most of the Junk in Halong Bay nowadays also used the symbol of  Dragon Head for Junk decoration. It became the traditional Junk design in Halong Bay.
